Nightbloom
Installation shots from Nightbloom, exhibited May 16 – June 21 at Tracey Morgan Gallery in Asheville, NC.
Moving between classical painting techniques and craft materials, the artwork of Nightbloom embraces decoration while reframing the female presence in Western art. Richly painted tableaus and lustrous ceramic objects recontextualize sentimental narratives, innuendos, and adornments prevalent in European art history. By hyperbolizing what has often been marginalized—decoration and sentimentality— Gullow undermines hierarchies that have long privileged austerity and control in visual culture.
